Dateline April 11, 2011, Clay's Wedding and the Big Island

Aloha Hawaii.

The reason for the trip was our nephew Clay Trauernicht's wedding to Talia. It was a happy reunion as well, since we had spent several wonderful evenings with Talia and her parents, Rachael and Bernie, the previous year when we were in Melbourne, Australia. Clay was working on his PhD at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, and was over in Melbourne the same week we were.

Clay is John's nephew, his sister Carol's son, and the oldest of the Wilson grandchildren. Sorry Nick, we did drive there in the RV, and that's the story we're sticking to.

A lovely wedding on the North Shore of Oahu. A few family pictures, with apologies to readers who aren't related.

After the wedding we headed over to the Big Island for a week with the Wilson clan. We visited Akaka Falls, which lived up to every photo we'd ever seen of them.

We kayaked a few miles across Kealakekua Bay to the Captain Cook Monument. Beach is the wrong word for it, what we landed on was a stretch of lava rocks, but it was a fine spot from which to go snorkeling.

It was extraordinary. Neither of us had ever seen so many colorful fish in one place.

We did fine in the kayaks given that neither of us had paddled one in years.

We are flying home today. For those who didn't already know, we are heading back to Florida to pack up the house into PODs and store our belongings. We have sold the house, so as of right now, we are officially homeless.

More news when our actual adventure begins, the end of April.
