Dateline August 25, 2024: Canadian Women’s Senior Amateur Championship

Janice Wilson at the Canadian Senior Womens Championship

Janice has played in many of the Canadian Senior events over the last 20 years. They move the tournament from Province to Province in a rotation. This year the tournament was in The Ontario Province at The Club of North Halton, in a small town just outside of Toronto, North Halton.

The practice round was on the 25th of August, Lin Culver, Marion Reid and Janice played together. The course was beautiful, greens were very large and tough to read so we knew it would be a great challenge over the next 2-3 days (there was a cut after the second day).

That evening was the opening ceremony for the tournament. It was a fantastic event, with the Provincial Teams that competed for the Team Championship as well as the overall Championship. It was led by a Bagpiper followed by all of the teams each carrying their provincial flag.

Opening ceremony with marlene streit world golf hall of fame

Many great Canadian female golfers attended. Marlene Streit, above in yellow, is now 90 years old. Marlene has been the top golf ambassador for Canada to the world. She enjoyed a brilliant career and constantly gave back to the game she had loved all these years. She has been inducted into both the Canadian and World Golf Hall of Fame.

Day 1 of the Tournament: Not What Janice Expected

Day 1 of the tournament didn’t go as Janice had hoped. She teed off at 1:30 p.m. on the first hole, but things took a turn for the worse right away. She finished the hole with a disastrous 10, which was double par. Although she managed to steady herself in the following holes, she ended the day with a score of 94. This meant she would need to play exceptionally well on Day 2 to make the cut.

Day 2: A Roller Coaster Round

On Day 2, Janice’s tee time was at 8:30 a.m. off the 10th tee. She got off to a decent start, even scoring a birdie on the par-3 9th hole and wrapping up the first nine holes with a solid 40. If she could shoot close to an 80 for the round, she had a good chance of making the cut.

Standing on the 10th tee, she thought, “It can’t be worse than yesterday.” Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. Her tee shot went astray but was still playable. However, a series of missteps led to another dreaded score of 10 on the hole—YIKES!

Janice finished the round with a 90, leaving her far behind and missing the cut—her first time missing the cut in a Canadian tournament.

Janice had a wonderful time playing and seeing many of the Canadians she has met over the years, there is always next year when the tournament will be out west , we shall see.

There Is No Place Like Home

We decided to spend the night and eat at another local restaurant called Killick Kitchen. The restaurant was terrific. We ordered the lamb chops on potato appetizer and some local wine; it was amazing. The restaurant is very small, but we were lucky to get a table; it is well worth making a reservation.

It would be about a 12 hour drive straight home. Janice likes driving so she took the wheel the entire drive. We departed about 5 a.m. and got home at about 6 p.m. Another grand time in Canada!
